FC Hopkins' 2008 Year-End Message

I would like to extend my warmest wishes for all of 6-1 for the Holiday Season.  It has been a very productive and interesting 2008.

I would also like to thank each of you for all the effort and time you invested throughout this past year toward accomplishing our Auxiliary missions whether they be on-the-water operations, shore side communications, public education, public affairs, member training, aviation missions, work with the local high schools for the Academy, or all the vessel examinations and dealer visitations.  There were many hours given to the US Coast Guard this year and many advancements that will improve our effectiveness and value in the coming year.

Some key points of 2008

bulletWe graduated 4 new coxswains this year.  Loren G, Loren S, Tim and Gene.  Congratulations to each of you.  Your pursuit and accomplishment of this qualification will be a great asset for the up-coming boating season.

bulletThanks to the efforts of Bob Liput, we hosted the Division 6 dinner at the Treasure Island Supper Club and he organized the flotilla Christmas party at Bullwinkle's in Miamisburg.

bulletVan has made substantial progress in improving our communications while we are out on the water.  This is a critical improvement to our mission and will be of great value in the coming year.

bulletI would like to recognize Bill, Gene, Tim, Loren S for all of the work and time they have invested in keeping Nautilus afloat and operating well.  It was a labor and time-intensive effort and without their expertise, she wouldn't be operational at all.

bulletLoren Gannon has applied an enormous amount of energy into Public Affairs in a effort to raise public awareness of the Auxiliary and increase recruiting.  His efforts locally have yielded newspaper articles, press coverage and a heightened awareness of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in the area.

bullet I would also like to thank Marjo van Patten for keeping our website up to date and informative.  This is an important function that would go unaccomplished without her.

This small list is by no means all-inclusive of all the accomplishments of 2008.  All of us have contributed in many ways that make not only 6-1 stronger but greatly enhance our primary mission - assisting the Coast Guard.

I thank all of you for everything you have done.  Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

Best regards,
Scott W. Hopkins
